Luigi 'Gigi' Riva (1944–2024) possessed an explosive left foot capable of unleashing shots of terrifying power and venom, earning the nickname 'Rombo di Tuono' from journalist Gianni Brera. Rejecting massive transfer fortunes from Juventus and Inter, Riva remained fiercely loyal to Sardinia.

Riva won the 1968 European Championship with Italy, scoring the opening goal in the final replay against Yugoslavia. In 1970, he scored twenty-one goals to fire Cagliari to a fairy-tale Serie A title and helped Italy reach the World Cup final after scoring in the 'Game of the Century' against West Germany.
