Biographical Record
Luigi Galvani (1737–1798), professor of anatomy at the University of Bologna, conducted pioneering physiological experiments with his wife Lucia Galeazzi Galvani. In 1780, observing that a dissected frog's leg twitched violently when touched with a scalpel while an electrostatic generator sparked nearby, Galvani initiated the science of electrophysiology.
In his 1791 treatise De viribus electricitatis in motu musculari, he demonstrated that electrical impulses pass through living nerve fibers to trigger muscular contraction. His discoveries founded neurophysiology, stimulated the invention of the electric battery by Volta, and gave the English language the verb 'to galvanize'.
