Archival Overview
Trailblazing vocal star who broke gender barriers in the 1950s as the first prominent female recording artist in Central Africa, performing with African Jazz, OK Jazz, and the Rock-a-Mambo orchestra.
Biographical Record
Lucie Eyenga Moseka was born circa 1934 in Bandaka (Coquilhatville). Discovered in Léopoldville in 1953 by legendary guitarist Papa Noel, Eyenga possessed an exceptionally warm, resonant vocal timbre that challenged male dominance in music.
Recording for the Opika label, her songs 'Brigitte', 'Miso na Nzoka', and 'Bolingo ya la Joie' became massive jukebox sensations across Belgian Congo and French Equatorial Africa. Joining Grand Kallé's African Jazz and touring West Africa, Eyenga paved the way for every African female artist who followed.
