Archival Overview
Foremost Flemish Baroque sculptor and architect of Mechelen who trained in the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens and designed the monumental Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk.
Biographical Record
Entering Rubens' Antwerp atelier at age nineteen, Faydherbe became one of the master's most trusted assistants and lifelong friends, translating Rubensian pictorial compositions into dynamic marble and alabaster reliefs. Following Rubens' death in 1640, Faydherbe returned to Mechelen.
He designed and constructed the grand circular dome of the Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk (1663–1681), adorning it with massive terracotta relief friezes. In St. Rumbold's Cathedral, he sculpted the colossal High Altar and archbishop funerary monuments, dominating seventeenth-century Flemish religious architecture.
