Lucas Cranach the Elder was a towering figure of the German Renaissance who served as court painter to three successive Electors of Saxony in Wittenberg. A versatile entrepreneur, printmaker, and close friend of Martin Luther, Cranach supplied the visual theology that propelled the Protestant Reformation across Europe.
His workshop produced iconic portraits of Luther and his inner circle, striking woodcuts illustrating the Reformist vernacular Bible, and moral allegories of Law and Grace. Simultaneously, Cranach created highly stylized, sinuous mythological nudes (such as Venus and Cupid) with a distinctive northern Gothic elegance and charm.
