Archival Overview
Supreme virtuoso of the Algerian ten-string mandole who preserved the classical Berber poetic forms (isefra) through mesmerizing improvisations.
Biographical Record
Hailing from the village of Ihadaden near Tizi Ouzou, Lounès Kheloui picked up the mandole in early childhood, absorbing both Chaabi modes and archaic Kabyle mountain melodies. His extraordinary dexterity and distinct, crystalline plectrum technique earned him the admiration of instrumentalists worldwide.
Over a four-decade career, his intimate musical evenings and hundreds of recordings preserved the spiritual and philosophical poetry of the Djurdjura highlands, leaving an indelible imprint on Amazigh music.
