"L'État, c'est moi. (I am the State.) It is by work that one rules; there is nothing more shameful for a monarch than to reign without governing."

Archival Overview

The "Sun King" whose 72-year reign is the longest recorded in European history. Consolidated absolute royal authority, built the magnificent Palace of Versailles, and presided over the Grand Siècle of French cultural, military, and artistic preeminence.

Biographical Record

Ascending the throne at age four under the regency of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Mazarin, Louis was traumatized by the aristocratic rebellions of the Fronde. Deciding to rule without a prime minister in 1661, he chose the emblem of the radiant Sun, domesticating the high nobility at Versailles.

With ministers Colbert and Louvois, he created a modern navy, standardized industries, and founded the Royal Academies of Sciences, Inscriptions, and Dance, patronizing Molière, Racine, and Lully as French culture became the standard of European courtly life.
