Archival Overview
Historic Acadian premier affectionately known as "Ti-Louis," whose revolutionary Equal Opportunity program and Official Languages Act ended systemic inequality in New Brunswick.
Biographical Record
Louis Joseph Robichaud was the first Acadian elected Premier of New Brunswick, sweeping to victory in 1960. Recognizing that Francophone Acadian counties suffered from drastic disparities in healthcare, schools, and roads compared to wealthier Anglophone counties, Robichaud launched the revolutionary Programme de chances égales (Equal Opportunity Program).
Robichaud centralized taxation and public administration to guarantee equal funding for schools and hospitals across all counties, founded the Université de Moncton in 1963, and passed New Brunswick's historic Official Languages Act in 1969. Appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada, he transformed his province forever.
