Archival Overview

French chemist and microbiologist who proved the germ theory of disease, disproved spontaneous generation, invented pasteurization, and created life-saving vaccines against rabies and anthrax.

Biographical Record

Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) began his scientific career solving molecular chirality (discovering that tartaric acid crystals exist in mirror-image left- and right-handed forms). In the 1860s, using famous swan-neck flask experiments, he conclusively disproved the millennia-old dogma of spontaneous generation, proving that microorganisms arise only from pre-existing airborne microbes.

Pasteur invented *pasteurization* (controlled heating to destroy spoilage pathogens in milk, wine, and beer), saving France's silkworm and wine industries. Extending germ theory to human disease, he attenuated pathogens to create vaccines for chicken cholera, anthrax, and, in July 1885, successfully treated nine-year-old Joseph Meister with the world's first rabies vaccine, founding the global network of Pasteur Institutes.

Key Life Milestones

1862 CE

Disproof of Spontaneous Generation & Pasteurization

Proved through swan-neck flasks that life does not arise spontaneously and patented milk/wine pasteurization.

6 July 1885 CE

First Successful Rabies Vaccine on Joseph Meister

Successfully saved nine-year-old Joseph Meister bitten by a rabid dog, marking a triumph for modern immunology.
