Biographical Record

Louis-Nicolas Davout (1770–1823) was famed for strict logistical discipline, uncorruptible honesty, and unmatched battlefield tactical coolness. His III Corps was the elite anvil of the Grande Armée, holding the crucial French right flank at Austerlitz in 1805.

On 14 October 1806 at the Battle of Auerstedt, isolated while Napoleon fought a diversionary force at Jena, Davout confronted the entire main Prussian royal army under the Duke of Brunswick. Fighting against odds of more than two to one, Davout completely shattered the Prussian forces.
