Archival Overview
Charismatic orator and leader of the Patriote Party whose Ninety-Two Resolutions demanded democratic self-rule and culminated in the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837.
Biographical Record
Papineau served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for two decades, championing popular sovereignty and resisting the authoritarian rule of the British governor and the 'Château Clique'. In 1834, he drafted the Ninety-Two Resolutions demanding an elected legislative council and fiscal control.
When British authorities rejected these demands and issued a warrant for his arrest in 1837, armed rebellion broke out. Papineau fled to the United States and France, returning under amnesty in 1845 to serve in the unified parliament while advocating republicanism and Quebec national rights from his manor at Montebello.
