Biographical Record
Louis Laurent Hunkanrin was born on November 25, 1886, in Porto-Novo into an aristocratic family. Trained as a teacher at the Ecole Normale de Saint-Louis in Senegal, he was dismissed from public service for writing fearless articles denouncing forced labour and colonial administrative corruption.
Affiliating with the French League for the Rights of Man and Pan-Africanist movements, Hunkanrin published incendiary tracts including Le Messager Dahomeen. Arrested repeatedly, he was sentenced to exile in Mauritania and Mali, spending a quarter of a century in remote penal colonies under the repressive indigenat code. Liberated after World War II, he returned to Porto-Novo as an elder statesman of Beninese freedom.
