"I have no reply to make to your general other than from the mouths of my cannons and muskets."

Archival Overview

Flamboyant and formidable Governor General of New France who expanded western fur trade forts and famously repelled Sir William Phips's English invasion of Quebec in 1690.

Biographical Record

Appointed governor by King Louis XIV in 1672, Count Frontenac established Fort Frontenac (Kingston) and aggressively sponsored the western explorations of La Salle, Marquette, and Jolliet to encircle English colonies.

When an English fleet under Sir William Phips demanded the surrender of Quebec in October 1690, Frontenac issued his legendary reply: 'I have no reply to make to your general other than from the mouths of my cannons and muskets.' His successful defense established French dominance across the northern interior.
