Archival Overview
Heroic French aviation pioneer and industrialist who made world history on July 25, 1909, by completing the first heavier-than-air flight across the English Channel in his Blériot XI monoplane.
Biographical Record
Graduating from the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, Blériot built a fortune inventing automobile acetylene headlamps before pouring his money into aircraft experimentation, surviving dozens of hair-raising crashes.
On July 25, 1909, taking off at dawn from Les Baraques near Calais on crutches due to an engine burn on his foot, Blériot flew his 25-horsepower three-cylinder Anzani monoplane across the choppy English Channel, landing thirty-seven minutes later near Dover Castle. His Blériot XI became the world's first mass-produced monoplane.
