Biographical Record
A medical orderly in the horrific trenches of World War I, Aragon co-founded Surrealism in 1924 (Le Paysan de Paris). Joining the French Communist Party in 1927, he met Russian-born novelist Elsa Triolet in 1928, inaugurating literature's most celebrated love partnership.
During World War II, Aragon led the National Writers' Committee in the underground resistance, composing luminous clandestine lyric poetry celebrating love and national defiance (Le Musée Grévin, Les Yeux d'Elsa). His poems, set to music by Léo Ferré and Jean Ferrat, became enduring classics of French popular song.
