Biographical Record
Elected to the National Convention at age twenty-five in 1792, Saint-Just leaped into national prominence with a chilling speech demanding Louis XVI's execution: 'One cannot reign innocently; every king is a rebel and a usurper.' As mission commissioner to the Rhine armies, his ruthless energy galvanized French forces to victory at Fleurus.
Saint-Just drafted the Ventôse Decrees confiscating property of counter-revolutionaries to distribute to the poor. On 9 Thermidor, shouting down opposition until silenced, he maintained glacial, stoic silence before being guillotined alongside Robespierre at age twenty-six.
