Towering Ottawa-born broadcaster and actor who became "The Voice of Doom" on CBC wartime radio before starring as Ben Cartwright in Bonanza.
Biographical Record
Lyon Himan "Lorne" Greene was born to immigrant parents in Ottawa and studied chemical engineering and drama at Queen's University. During World War II, Greene was the chief radio newsreader for CBC; his deep, dramatic baritone voice delivered wartime bulletins to the nation, earning him the moniker "The Voice of Canada" (and "The Voice of Doom" during dark military setbacks).
Greene invented a stopwatch that ran backwards for radio timing before heading to Hollywood. In 1959, he was cast as patriarch Ben Cartwright on the legendary western series Bonanza, which ran for fourteen seasons. He later starred as Commander Adama in Battlestar Galactica and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
