Archival Overview

Internationally acclaimed Canadian concert singer who overcame childhood polio to triumph in Bach, Handel, and Mahler under Arturo Toscanini and Sir Thomas Beecham.

Biographical Record

Lois Catherine Marshall contracted polio at age two, which left her with lifelong mobility challenges. Guided by her devoted vocal teacher Weldon Kilburn at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Marshall developed a voice of astonishing purity, flexibility, and profound emotional nobility.

In 1952, she won the Naumburg Award in New York, prompting legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini to invite her to sing in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the NBC Symphony. She toured Russia, Europe, and the Commonwealth as one of the world's supreme oratorio and lieder artists, made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
