Chairman of the People's Republic of China and chief architect of post-Great Leap Forward economic recovery, author of How to Be a Good Communist, who died in solitary persecution during the Cultural Revolution.

Biographical Record

Educated in Moscow at the University of the Toilers of the East, Liu Shaoqi (1898–1969) was the preeminent underground trade union organizer of the Chinese Communist Party. In 1939, he wrote 'How to Be a Good Communist' ('Lun Gongchandangyuan de Xiuyang'), defining ethical self-cultivation for revolutionary cadre.

Succeeding Mao as Chairman of the PRC (Head of State) in 1959, Liu and Deng Xiaoping restored private peasant plots and market incentives to halt the catastrophic famine caused by the Great Leap Forward. Targeted by Mao in 1966 as the 'Number One Capitalist Roader', he was stripped of all titles and died in secret detention in Kaifeng.
