Biographical Record
Lionel Pretoria "Big Train" Conacher was the most versatile athletic phenom in Canadian history. Raised in poverty in Toronto's Davenport district, Conacher achieved superstar dominance in four separate professional sports: winning the Grey Cup with the Toronto Argonauts in 1921, two Stanley Cups in the NHL (with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1934 and Montreal Maroons in 1935), the Canadian Light Heavyweight boxing title, and AAA minor league baseball championships.
In 1950, Canadian sports journalists voted Conacher "Canada's Male Athlete of the Half-Century." He later served with distinction as a Member of Parliament for Toronto-Trinity.
