Archival Overview
The founding patriarch and undisputed master of modern Amazigh (Soussi) poetry and music, whose virtuosity on the single-stringed ribab and philosophical Tamazight verses transformed Moroccan folk culture.
Biographical Record
Lhaj Belaid was born in the Anti-Atlas mountains near Tiznit. Blind or visually impaired in youth, he mastered the traditional single-stringed Amazigh violin (ribab) and became the premier wandering troubadour (Amarg) of southern Morocco.
In the 1920s and 1930s, he recorded historic 78-rpm shellac discs in Paris with Baidaphon and Gramophone, becoming the first Amazigh artist recorded in world music history. His philosophical poems on morality, migration, and Amazigh identity remain the bedrock of southern Moroccan music.
