Archival Overview

Australian tennis player, four-time Grand Slam singles champion and back-to-back Wimbledon winner, celebrated for his immense power and explosive wrist speed.

Biographical Record

Lewis Alan 'Lew' Hoad (1934–1994) was an Australian tennis powerhouse whose devastating serve, explosive topspin, and brute wrist strength made him virtually unplayable at his peak. Alongside childhood friend Ken Rosewall, Hoad dominated world tennis under legendary coach Harry Hopman, leading Australia to four Davis Cup victories.

Hoad won back-to-back Wimbledon titles in 1956 and 1957. In 1956, he came within one match of the Calendar Grand Slam, winning Australia, France, and Wimbledon. Later retiring to Spain, his Costa del Sol tennis ranch became a mecca for the world tennis elite.
