Lev Yashin

Lev Ivanovich Yashin was born in Moscow into a family of industrial workers. During World War II at age twelve, he was put to work in a military munitions factory to support the Soviet war effort. Suffering from stress and nervous exhaustion, he was recruited into the factory's football team and soon joined Dynamo Moscow's sports society in 1949, initially playing as both a football goalkeeper and an ice hockey goaltender, winning the Soviet Ice Hockey Cup in 1953.

Devoting himself entirely to football, Yashin spent his entire 22-year professional career with Dynamo Moscow, capturing five Soviet top league championships. At a time when goalkeepers were expected to remain rooted between the goalposts, Yashin revolutionized the position: he shouted tactical instructions to his defenders, charged off his line to intercept crosses, punched dangerous balls away, and threw rapid counter-attacking passes.

Dressed in his iconic all-black jersey and cloth flat cap, Yashin was nicknamed 'The Black Spider' (Chyornaya Pantera) because his outstretched limbs seemed to cover the entire goal frame. He represented the Soviet Union at four World Cups (1958, 1962, 1966, 1970), keeping over 270 clean sheets and saving an estimated 151 penalty kicks in his career. In 1963, France Football awarded Yashin the Ballon d'Or as European Footballer of the Year, an unmatched milestone for any goalkeeper.
