Biographical Record
A WWI veteran and history professor, Pearson entered the diplomatic corps, rising to Minister of External Affairs. During the 1956 Suez Crisis, his diplomatic genius created the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF), diffusing an imminent nuclear superpower confrontation and earning him the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize.
As Prime Minister (1963–1968), despite leading minority governments, Pearson instituted the defining social pillars of modern Canada: universal Medicare, the Canada Pension Plan, student loans, the 40-hour work week, official bilingualism, and the adoption of the iconic Maple Leaf national flag in 1965.
