Archival Overview

Colossal figure of Argentine Modernism who authored visionary short stories in Las fuerzas extrañas, established Martín Fierro as national epic in El Payador, and whose birthday is celebrated as Argentine Writer's Day.

Biographical Record

Leopoldo Antonio Lugones was born on June 13, 1874, in Villa de María, Córdoba. A close intellectual friend of Rubén Darío, he emerged as the supreme stylistic virtuoso of Latin American Modernist poetry with Los crepúsculos del jardín (1905) and Lunario sentimental (1909), introducing free verse and lunar metaphors.

In 1906, Lugones published Las fuerzas extrañas, a pioneering landmark of Latin American science fiction and supernatural horror that deeply influenced Jorge Luis Borges and Horacio Quiroga. In 1913, his famous lecture cycle published as El Payador elevated the gaucho epic Martín Fierro into Argentina's national myth. On June 13, his birthday is celebrated nationwide as Día del Escritor (Writer's Day).
