Archival Overview
Ostend-born master of hypnotic, haunting Symbolist ink washes and gouaches whose nocturnal seaside promenades, solitary figures, and dizzying spirals of staircases explored profound existential alienation.
Biographical Record
Plagued from youth by severe insomnia and chronic stomach ulcers, Spilliaert wandered the desolate seawall, empty beaches, and harbor lighthouses of Ostend in the dead of night, channeling his solitary anguish into innovative works combining India ink, wash, and colored pastel.
His iconic masterpieces, including Clair de Lune et Lumières (1909), Vertigo (The Staircase, 1908), and piercing self-portraits in mirrors, stripped composition down to stark silhouetted forms and vast geometric voids, prefiguring both Expressionism and Surrealism.
