Archival Overview

Colossus of world literature whose epic panoramic masterworks War and Peace and Anna Karenina captured the entire canvas of human life, and whose later Christian anarchist pacifism (The Kingdom of God Is Within You) inspired Mahatma Gandhi.

Biographical Record

Count Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), born into Russian aristocracy at his estate Yasnaya Polyana, served as an artillery officer in the Crimean War, surviving the brutal Siege of Sevastopol. In the 1860s, he produced War and Peace (1869), a monumental epic following five aristocratic families through the Napoleonic invasion of 1812, integrating historical philosophy with breathless psychological realism.

His subsequent masterpiece, Anna Karenina (1877), opening with the immortal axiom 'All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way', explored tragic love against moral duty. Experiencing a profound spiritual crisis around age fifty, Tolstoy renounced his wealth, titles, and copyright, adopting peasant dress and formulating an uncompromising doctrine of nonviolent resistance (*The Kingdom of God Is Within You*), which directly shaped Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church, he fled his estate in winter at age eighty-two, dying in a remote railway station at Astapovo.
