Biographical Record
Leandro Alem was born on March 11, 1842, in Buenos Aires. The son of a Mazorca officer executed after Rosas' fall, Alem overcame social stigma to become a distinguished lawyer, deputy, and senator, fiercely opposing electoral fraud and oligarchic corruption.
In 1890, Alem led the Civic Union in the armed 'Revolution of the Park' against President Juárez Celman. In 1891, he founded the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), establishing Argentina's first modern democratic mass political party. In 1896, heartbroken by political compromises and intra-party betrayal, Alem took his own life in a carriage outside the Club del Progreso, leaving a famous political testament ending with the immortal words: 'Que se rompa, pero que no se doble' (Let it break, but let it not bend!).
