Archival Overview

Vietnamese national hero and founder of the Later Le Dynasty who led the ten-year Lam Son Uprising against Ming Chinese occupation, immortalized by the Legend of the Returned Sword at Hoan Kiem Lake.

Biographical Record

A wealthy landowner in Lam Son, Le Loi (1385–1433) refused to serve the occupying Ming dynasty, launching the Lam Son Uprising in 1418. Aided by brilliant strategist Nguyen Trai, Le Loi utilized guerrilla warfare in the mountains of Thanh Hoa, outlasting Ming search-and-destroy campaigns.

In 1426, Le Loi routed the Ming army at Tot Dong-Chuc Dong and besieged Hanoi. In 1427, after wiping out Ming reinforcements at Chi Lang, the Ming signed a peace treaty withdrawing from Vietnam. According to legend, while boating on Hoan Kiem Lake, a golden turtle emerged to reclaim the magic sword 'Heaven's Will' (Thuan Thien).
