Archival Overview
Master painter and sculptor from Khenchela whose powerful totemic sculptures and mixed-media paintings celebrated the ancestral resilience and visual heritage of the Aurès.
Biographical Record
Lazhar Hakkar was born in Khenchela in the heart of the rugged Chaoui highlands. Graduating from the National Superior School of Fine Arts in Algiers, he returned to the Aurès to develop an intensely raw, powerful artistic language rooted in ancient North African rock art, pottery markings, and wood carvings.
Hakkar created towering totemic wooden sculptures and textured canvases using sand, clay, and dark earthen pigments that evoked the tragedy, courage, and ancient survival of his people. Exhibited internationally, his works represent the powerful sculptural voice of the eastern mountains.
