Archival Overview
Visionary artist and spiritual leader of the Group of Seven, whose luminous, austere paintings of Lake Superior, the Arctic, and the Rocky Mountains redefined the Canadian visual imagination.
Biographical Record
Heir to the Massey-Harris farm machinery fortune, Harris studied art in Berlin before returning to Toronto determined to create a national school of painting. He financed the Studio Building in Toronto in 1914 and organized boxcar sketching expeditions into the Algoma wilderness.
Deeply influenced by Theosophy, Harris distilled the Canadian wilderness into pure, geometric, light-filled forms in iconic works like North Shore, Lake Superior (1926) and Mount Lefroy. He was the only Group of Seven member to transition successfully into pure spiritual abstraction.
