Biographical Record
Laurent-Désiré Kabila was born on November 27, 1939, in Jadotville (Likasi), Katanga. A staunch follower of Lumumba, he fought secessionist forces in 1960 and commanded the eastern maquis forces in 1964 alongside Ernesto Che Guevara.
Establishing the autonomous revolutionary enclave in the Fizi-Baraka mountains of South Kivu, Kabila operated an independent community for over twenty years. In October 1996, he formed the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire (AFDL). In May 1997, his troops entered Kinshasa, ending Mobutu Sese Seko's 32-year kleptocracy and restoring the name Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was assassinated in his office on January 16, 2001.
