"As long as I live, you will not lay one single railway sleeper across the soil of Cayor; for where the iron road goes, the freedom of my ancestors dies."

Archival Overview

Damel of the Kingdom of Cayor and legendary Senegalese national hero who waged a fierce twenty-year resistance against French colonial governor Louis Faidherbe to stop the French military Dakar-Saint-Louis railway across his sovereign lands.

Biographical Record

Lat Dior Ngone Latyr Diop (1842–1886) was crowned Damel (King) of Cayor in 1862. Recognizing that French plans to construct the Dakar-to-Saint-Louis railway across Cayor would carve up his kingdom, destroy native peanut agriculture, and serve colonial military conquest, Lat Dior forbade its construction.

Allied with the Tijaniyya warrior-scholar Maba Diakhou Ba, Lat Dior inflicted heavy defeats on French colonial battalions at Ngolgol (1863) and Mekhe (1869). On October 27, 1886, refusing to surrender his homeland, Lat Dior led his final cavalry charge against French troops at the Battle of Dékheulé, falling heroically beside his two sons.
