Biographical Record
Larbi Benbarek (1917–1992) grew up playing barefoot football in the working-class streets of Casablanca before joining USM Casablanca. In 1938, signed by Olympique de Marseille, his jaw-dropping dribbling, supernatural ball control, and lightning elegance electrified European football, earning his selection for the French national team.
From 1948 to 1953, Benbarek formed the legendary 'Cristal Forward Line' at Atlético Madrid, scoring sixty-three goals in 123 matches and leading Atlético to back-to-back La Liga championships (1950, 1951). When Pelé visited Morocco in 1976, the Brazilian titan famously declared: 'If I am the King of Football, then Larbi Benbarek was the God.' He served as the first national coach of independent Morocco.
