Archival Overview

Iconic Algerian revolutionary strategist, founding member of the 'Six Chefs Historiques' of the FLN, commander of the Battle of Algiers, revered for his serene smile and indomitable courage under torture.

Biographical Record

Larbi Ben M'hidi (1923–1957) was a brilliant political organizer who helped direct the Secret Organization (OS) and co-founded the National Liberation Front (FLN). Entrusted with commanding Wilaya V (Oranie), he transformed western Algeria into a formidable guerrilla bastion before presiding over the historic Soummam Congress in 1956.

Assigned to lead the autonomous Zone of Algiers alongside Abane Ramdane during the Battle of Algiers, Ben M'hidi famously answered French reporters about bomb-carrying baskets: 'Give us your bombers, and we will give you our baskets.' Captured in February 1957, he smiled serenely in chains, refused to divulge any secrets under horrific torture, and was murdered by French paratroopers.
