Archival Overview
The last ruler of the 252-year-old Husainid Dynasty, who supported the nationalist independence movement against French colonial authorities before the proclamation of the Tunisian Republic in 1957.
Biographical Record
Lamine Bey was elevated to the throne in 1943 following the French deposition of Moncef Bey. Although initially regarded warily by nationalists, Lamine gradually aligned with Habib Bourguiba and the Neo-Destour, refusing French decrees, demanding genuine sovereignty, and patronizing resistance leaders.
On March 20, 1956, he signed the historic Franco-Tunisian protocol recognizing Tunisia's full independence, becoming King of Tunisia. On July 25, 1957, the National Constituent Assembly unanimously abolished the monarchy, establishing the Tunisian Republic, and Lamine spent his final years peacefully in a private residence in Tunis.
