"I am the legitimate trustee of this sanctuary by the will of my father and the laws of God; no colonial general will take it from my hands."

Archival Overview

Algerian female religious leader and Sufi shaykha who succeeded her father Cheikh Mohamed Belqacem as head of the prestigious Rahmaniyya Zawiya of El Hamel in 1897, successfully defying French colonial attempts to seize its vast endowments.

Biographical Record

Lalla Zaynab (c. 1850–1904) was the exceptionally educated daughter of Cheikh Mohamed Belqacem, founder of the great zawiya of El Hamel near Boussaâda. She mastered Islamic jurisprudence, Sufi theology, and property law, managing the sanctuary's vast agricultural estates and charitable kitchens.

When her father passed away in 1897, French colonial military authorities attempted to impose a pliable male puppet cousin to seize the zawiya's immense wealth and influence. Lalla Zaynab boldly resisted, hiring French attorneys, quoting the French Civil Code and Islamic Sharia, and proving her undisputed legitimate leadership before the French Governor-General. She sheltered wounded anti-colonial rebels and hosted Isabelle Eberhardt.
