Archival Overview

Legendary Kabyle religious leader and anti-colonial resistance commander known as the 'Joan of Arc of the Djurdjura', who rallied Berber mountain confederations and routed French imperial armies.

Biographical Record

Lalla Fatma N'Soumer (c. 1830–1863) belonged to a prestigious maraboutic family of the Rahmaniyya Sufi order in Great Kabylia. Renowned for her Quranic scholarship and spiritual charisma, she rejected traditional domestic confinement to command armed forces alongside Sherif Boubaghla following the French invasion of Kabylia.

In 1854, her strategic tactical leadership crushed the French expeditionary forces of General MacMahon and Marshal Randon at the Battle of Oued Sebaou. Captured in 1857 after heroic mountain defenses, she was imprisoned at Tablat until her premature death at age thirty-three, remaining an eternal symbol of Algerian female resistance.
