Archival Overview
Heroic Chaouia tribal woman who took up arms and rallied Moroccan horsemen to resist the French naval bombardment and military invasion of Casablanca in August 1907.
Biographical Record
Lalla Aïcha Bent Omar was a prominent daughter of the Oulad Ziane clan of the Chaouia tribal confederacy. When the French cruiser Galilée bombarded Casablanca in August 1907 and landed naval troops at the port, Lalla Aïcha rode alongside tribal warriors to repel the foreign forces.
Witnesses recorded her standing on defensive mounds rallying Moroccan cavalrymen with patriotic cries until she was struck by naval shellfire, becoming a legendary martyr of early 20th-century Moroccan resistance against European colonization.
