Heroic ALN commander in Wilaya 4 and co-founder of the FFS, who remained an unbending champion of democracy and popular sovereignty until his death at age 87.
Biographical Record
Lakhdar Bouragaa deserted the French military in 1956 to join the National Liberation Army (ALN) in Wilaya 4, rapidly rising through valor and tactical skill to the rank of Commandant. He commanded the famous Katiba Zoubiria, inflicting heavy losses on colonial forces throughout the Ouarsenis and Blida Atlas.
Following independence, Bouragaa co-founded the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS) alongside Hocine Aït Ahmed in 1963. In 2019, at age 86, he became an inspiring patriarchal icon of the peaceful popular Hirak movement, imprisoned for refusing to compromise on civilian democracy and winning the adoration of millions of young Algerians.
