Archival Overview
Distinguished philosopher from Cyrene who succeeded Arcesilaus as head of the Platonic Academy in Athens in 241 BCE, presiding over Academic Skeptical philosophy for over a quarter-century.
Biographical Record
Born in the Hellenistic Libyan city of Cyrene, Lacydes moved to Athens where his extraordinary dialectical rigor caught the attention of Arcesilaus. In 241 BCE, he assumed the leadership of the Platonic Academy, relocating its seminar gardens to a new precinct gifted by King Attalus I of Pergamon, named the *Lacydeum*.
He guided the Academy through twenty-six years of rigorous epistemological debate, refining the skeptical stance that suspended judgment (*epoche*) to attain inner serenity (*ataraxia*), stepping down peacefully in his old age in favor of his disciples Telecles and Evander.
