Ahom generalissimo who defended the independence of Assam against the mighty Mughal Empire, famously defeating Ram Singh I's imperial armada at the naval Battle of Saraighat on the Brahmaputra River in 1671.
Biographical Record
Appointed Borphukan (Supreme Military Commander) by Ahom King Chakradhwaj Singha, Lachit (1622–1672) organized earthen fortifications along the Brahmaputra River. When his own maternal uncle was found sleeping on duty during fortification construction, Lachit executed him on the spot, famously proclaiming: 'My uncle is not greater than my motherland.'
In 1671, despite suffering from severe fever, Lachit boarded his war boat and led the Ahom navy into the narrow gorge at Saraighat. Using agile catamarans, hidden river stockades, and knowledge of the Brahmaputra's treacherous currents, he routed the Mughal fleet, preserving Northeast India's sovereignty.
