"I have sought to find in the quiet corners of our prairie yards the essential rhythm of living forms."

Archival Overview

Subtle master of prairie light and geometric landscape whose contemplative drawings and paintings made him the final member appointed to the Group of Seven in 1932.

Biographical Record

Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald was the only Western Canadian member of the Group of Seven, invited to join in 1932 following the death of J.E.H. MacDonald. Based in Winnipeg, where he served for decades as principal of the Winnipeg School of Art, FitzGerald developed a singularly delicate, patient aesthetic characterized by intricate flecks of paint and architectural geometry.

His depictions of backyard Manitoba lanes, prairie apple orchards, and dry summer grasses (such as Doc Snider's House and The Prairie) transformed everyday Midwestern domesticity into spiritual contemplations of light and structure.
