"If the mountains are stripped of trees, the water dries up; when the soil washes away, the rivers flood and the people starve. True governance must begin with the soil."

Archival Overview

Visionary Edo-period Japanese philosopher of the Wang Yangming school (Oyomeigaku) who served as chief advisor in Okayama Domain and formulated the world's earliest comprehensive philosophy of ecological conservation and watershed management.

Biographical Record

Kumazawa Banzan (1619–1691) studied under Nakae Toju, embracing the unity of moral knowledge and decisive practical action. Serving Daimyo Ikeda Mitsumasa in Okayama, Banzan designed flood control reservoirs, relief storehouses that prevented famine, and commoner schools.

In treatises like 'Daigaku Wakumon' (Questions on the Great Learning), Banzan warned that deforestation of mountain slopes led to soil erosion, river siltation, and catastrophic agricultural famines, demanding reforestation and ecological balance. His sharp criticisms of shogunate samurai debt and corruption led to his house arrest in Koga.
