Polymath, calligrapher, engineer, and founder of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism who built Mount Koya and taught 'attaining Buddhahood in this very body' (Sokushin Jobutsu).

Biographical Record

Kukai (774–835 CE), revered as Kobo Daishi, traveled on the same imperial mission to Tang China as Saicho in 804, studying under master Huiguo at Qinglong Temple in Chang'an.

He synthesized esoteric Tantric Buddhism in Japan, founded the monastic sanctuary of Mount Koya, constructed the Manno reservoir dam, and invented the kana syllabary according to Japanese tradition.
