Archival Overview

Grandson of Genghis Khan who completed the conquest of China, founding the Yuan Dynasty. Established modern Beijing (Dadu / Khanbaliq) as imperial capital, introduced universal paper currency (Chao), and hosted European traveler Marco Polo.

Biographical Record

Unlike earlier steppe conquerors, Kublai embraced Chinese administrative philosophy, taking the dynastic name "Yuan" from the I Ching. He repaired and extended the Grand Canal directly into Beijing, promoted agricultural cooperatives, and created postal and courier networks across Eurasia.

His cosmopolitan court welcomed Tibetan lamas, Persian astronomers, Nestorian Christians, and Italian merchants. Marco Polo's memoirs introduced his glittering summer capital of Shangdu (Xanadu) to the Western imagination as the archetype of royal magnificence.
