Archival Overview
Greatest emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire (1509–1529) who presided over the golden age of South Indian architecture and literature, built the breathtaking temple monuments of Hampi, and authored the Telugu epic 'Amuktamalyada'.
Biographical Record
Krishnadevaraya (1471–1529) of the Tuluva dynasty transformed Vijayanagara into an imperial superpower, decisively defeating the Sultanates of Bijapur, Golconda, and the Gajapatis of Odisha, capturing the impregnable fortress of Raichur in 1520. Portuguese chroniclers Domingo Paes and Fernão Nunes described Vijayanagara as larger and richer than Rome.
A poet-king of peerless erudition, Krishnadevaraya composed the epic Telugu poem 'Amuktamalyada' on the life of poet-saint Andal, containing profound political treatises on kingship. His court was graced by the 'Ashtadiggajas' (Eight Titans of Poetry), including Tenali Rama and Allasani Peddana, while he built the iconic Vittala Temple stone chariot and towering gopurams across South India.
