Biographical Record

Krim Belkacem (1922–1970) took to the Kabyle maquis as an outlaw as early as 1947, becoming the longest-serving armed insurgent against French colonialism. One of the 'Six Chefs Historiques', he ensured the unconditional mobilization of Greater and Lesser Kabylie for the November 1, 1954 uprising.

A key architect of the 1956 Soummam Congress, Belkacem served as Minister of Armed Forces and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA). His diplomatic triumph culminated in March 1962, when he led the Algerian delegation that outmaneuvered French diplomats to sign the Evian Accords, guaranteeing full territorial sovereignty including the Sahara.
