Archival Overview
German electronic music titan and Krautrock pioneer whose monumental Berlin School synthesizer compositions, early membership in Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel, and over 60 solo albums laid the foundations of ambient, new age, and trance music.
Biographical Record
Klaus Schulze was born in Berlin and began his musical path as a drummer in Berlin's underground psychedelic scene. In 1969, he joined Edgar Froese and Conrad Schnitzler in Tangerine Dream, drumming on their historic debut album Electronic Meditation (1970). He then co-founded the cosmic Krautrock band Ash Ra Tempel with Manuel Göttsching before embarking on a pioneering solo career focused purely on modular synthesizers.
Schulze became a leading architect of the "Berlin School" of electronic music, crafting expansive, hypnotic sequencer-driven space-music suites on massive Moog, ARP, and EMS synthesizer rigs. Solo masterworks like Timewind (1975), Moondawn (1976), and Mirage (1977) directly inspired the evolution of modern ambient, trance, and techno music. He released over sixty solo albums across fifty years and collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack for Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021) shortly before his death.
