Kiyoshi Shiga (1871–1957) graduated from Tokyo Imperial University and joined Kitasato Shibasaburo's Institute for Infectious Diseases. During a devastating dysentery epidemic in 1897 that infected over 90,000 people across Japan, Shiga isolated the causal Gram-negative bacterium within months.

His identification of Shigella dysenteriae and subsequent characterization of the Shiga neurotoxin established modern scientific diagnostics for intestinal epidemics, saving countless millions of lives through targeted sanitation and anti-toxin research.
